One dress, several summers. How to pick a wedding guest dress that survives the photos and the years.
Start with the venue, not the dress
A church ceremony asks for covered shoulders or a wrap. A marquee in September asks for a fabric that copes with grass, wind and a walk between buildings. A city hotel is the most forgiving of the three.
Once you know the venue, the choice narrows quickly — and you stop scrolling through dresses that would never have worked.
Colours that photograph well and repeat well
Avoid white, ivory and anything close to it. Beyond that, deep sage, dusty rose, navy, chocolate and burgundy all photograph beautifully in British light and read as elegant rather than costume.
The rewear test: could you wear this to a birthday dinner in January with a cardigan and boots? If yes, the dress will earn its price several times over.
